Each year Fukiai High School welcomes several international students to our campus. They are provided with homestays with the families of Fukiai students during their time in Japan. The length of stay in Japan is usually from 2-11 months – though 1 week stays also occur.
In recent years these students have come from the following countries: Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Norway, Sweden, Thailand & USA.
The international students have their own study room where they are provided with a large number of supplementary Japanese lessons. These lessons help the students attain a level of Japanese proficiency whereby they can communicate reasonably well with classmates as well as their host families.
Each international student belongs to a homeroom of which they are an integral part. Together with students from their homeroom, they will take part in regular lessons, (such as English and P.E. lessons) and school events (such as Sport’s Day & the Cultural Festival).
International students also often take part in extracurricular activities such as club activities. The Sado (Japanese tea ceremony), Shodou (Japanese calligraphy) clubs and martial arts (e.g. Shorinji Kempo & Naginata) clubs have proved very popular.
The presence of international students at our school is highly beneficial to all concerned. There is a rich, cultural exchange and many lasting friendships are formed between the international and Fukiai students.
