What exactly is 'Global Studies'?

Global Studies(GS) is a NEW course of study created by teachers at Fukiai High School as part of the school's original Super Global High School Program.

Global Studies is a kind of integrated learning where teachers form various backgrounds & core subjects including social studies, geography & history, English, Japanese & ICT (including media literacy) work together to create and teach course materials. This unified approach leads to more cohesive learning.

Topics can be presented in a logical order and background information presented by one subject teacher (e.g. political, economic & social issues in a country by a social studies instructor) will prove invaluable for later activities in  a different discipline (e.g. Online discussions in English with students in that country).
  • The bulk of the program is aimed at students in the International Course, but Regular Course students also take part in selected activities (such as lectures given to the entire grade related to International Affairs).
  • The purpose of GS is to facilitate the goals of the SGH program & create Global Leaders.
That objective can be achieved over three years by students taking part in a wide variety of GS activities that develop the core 16 attributes of MAKS.

GS Subjects
The Global Studies course is divided into various subjects (taken by International Course students) as follows:
  • GSA (Global Studies A)
The focus is on helping students over a three-year course, gain a deep knowledge of global issues and ensuring students have the skills to properly research & analyze and come up with effective plans to deal with those problems.
  • GSB (Global Studies B)
The focus is learning from various experts on International Affairs & Global Issues through lectures, workshops and also includes Fukiai students taking part in fieldwork.
Additional GS Activities
In addition to these subjects, students have many opportunities to interact with their peers from abroad including:
  • Internet conferences (with various affiliated schools)
  • Research trips abroad (e.g. To the Philippines)
  • Discussions with Sister-school students (in 2015)
  • International Summit at Fukiai (in the 3rd year of our program - 2016)
