International Issues & Human Rights

On November 13th (during 6th & 7th periods), Professor Kazushi Hosomi of Kwansei Gakuin University’s School of Policy Study came to speak to our first year International Course students.

The theme of his lesson was “Let’s consider the international community (of nations) from the viewpoint of human rights”.

Prof. Hosomi

First he defined “human rights” and clarified their attributes as follows:

  • They are a right guaranteed equally to all human beings.
  • They cannot be taken away (by any authority under any conditions).
  • They are rights independent of the laws of any nation, and cannot be limited by any nation or border.

Then the professor moved on to the history of human rights.
Greater awareness of the concept of basic human rights (political rights, citizenship rights, societal & cultural rights etc.) came about in the period of the Enlightenment in 17th century Europe.

Acknowledgement of human rights continued to progress in the 18th century with:

  • the U.S. Declaration of Independence
  • France’s Declaration of the Rights of Man & of the Citizen

And in the 20th century with:

  • the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (1948)

Particularly after the Second World War with the establishment of the United Nations greater emphasis was placed on human rights when dealing with international problems. Among those issues connected to the rights of people were the issues of racial discrimination and the plight of refugees.

Lastly, Professor Hosomi pointed out that “if we look at the international community from the point of view of human rights,we will become aware of critical issues and we will have a deeper, broader global perspective.”

Students at Fukiai High study numerous social and global issues, such as racial discrimination, so keeping in mind Professor Hosomi’s advice will be most helpful in numerous lessons at the school and also later in life.
