Philippines Field Trip Preparation Sessions

Two sessions were arranged so that a group of twelve, first grade international course students could receive expert advice about their research projects and guidance in preparation for their Philippines Field Work Trip. The sessions were held on Monday, March 7th and Wednesday, March 9th.

The students were divided into the following three teams according to research topic categories:
  • The Life Culture Team,
  • Education Team,
  • and Politics Team,
After each team had presented their research projects and recommendations, they received helpful feedback and advice from the university professor present on that day.

DAY 1 (Monday, March 7th)
Supervised by Professor Nakashima from the Kobe City University of Foreign Studies.
Our students did their best to explain their research topics and approaches to Professor Nakashima who pointed out problem areas with regard to certain aspects of their research topics, and accumulated data among other things
for these topics:
  • Poverty in the Philippines
  • Disparity & Quality Issues with Regards Education in the Philippines
  • Election Related Education in the Philippines

The advice our students received included
  • investigating and making comparisons with neighboring nations
  • current used strategies/approaches
  • listening to the opinions of adults dealing with/involved with the particular issue

DAY 2 (Wednesday, March 9th)
Supervised by Professor Cornelius of Ateneo University in the Philippines.
Professor Cornelius' told our students that when considering social problems it was particularly important to be aware of the following:
  • "What exactly is the problem? And what are the hopes and expectations of the people affected by them?"
  • "What can we do to meet those expectations or fulfill those wishes?"

He also gave each of the three teams clear-cut advice and helped our students prepare for their field trip to his country by providing them with useful local knowledge and how best to carry out their research.
