Eli Lilly and Company is a global pharmaceutical company with its headquarters in Indianapolis, USA, where it was founded in 1876.  The company has in its long history made major contributions to its field including being the first company to mass-produce penicillin, the polio vaccine, and insulin. The company has its Japan head office in Kobe.

During 6th and 7th periods on Thursday,November 2, 2017, four guest speakers from Eli Lilly Co., Ltd conducted and a lecture attended by all 80 international course first grade students.

Eli Lilly and Company has hiring policies and does work to promote diversity both within and outside the company.

  • In the first half of the lecture, the guest lecturers explained among other things their company’s basic philosophy, and how employees go about their work at the company.

  • In the second half, the guest speakers conducted a workshop based on what was said in the former session.

1st Session - Company Philosophy + Activities

In this session the Eli Lilly and Company representatives talked in depth about the importance the company places upon

  • integrity,
  • the pursuit of excellence,
  • and respect for others.

The company also prizes the diversity in values and attributes of each and every employee and this contributes both to the personal growth of individuals and the company itself. The company has a “smart” approach to company life - the company has created an excellent work environment where both the company and its workers can be productive and content.

The next speaker from Eli Lilly and Company, Ms. Yoshikawa, talked about how company, employees such as herself take part in NPO activities. She has done NPO work to support children with psychiatric problems.

Those volunteer activities included

  • running parent-child yoga sessions,
  • reading aloud stories to children,
  • and musical events.

Ms.Yoshikawa explained one reason workers at the company took the time and made such an effort to participate in such activities was that they strongly believed that it mirrored the company’s philosophy of interacting with various kinds of people, in a wide variety of situations, and not only helping other human beings in need, but also helping them develop as a person. This ties in with the above stated emphasis on integrity, the pursuit of excellence, and respect for others.

2nd Session - Workshop

In the workshop session, students made groups of eight, and sat in a circle on the floor in those ten groups.
Then students wrote on a round sheet of paper at the center of each group about the topic they were given.

  • The first topic that was discussed was “What kind of company employee do you want to be in the future?” Students wrote down key words on the circular sheet.

  • The next challenge was for students to look at those key words and work out what they needed to do in order to ensure they can indeed become that type of person and worker.

After that each group summarized the results of their discussions in front of everyone.

Here are some attributes students thought were important:

  • "Becoming someone who is useful to others."
  • "Becoming someone who can do things no one else can."
  • "Being someone who is trusted by everyone."

In order to realize one’s personal goals as an employee, students said the following was necessary...

  • "having a broad perspective",
  • "always thinking about other people when saying or doing something"
  • "having a genuine interest in your job,and using that as a motivation to gain further job experience"
  • "putting 100% into both work and hobbies."

In this lecture/workshop our students could learn the importance and benefits of a fundamental respect for others, diversity and contributing to society. They could also start to think about what qualities are important in an a working adult and what they need to do (starting today) to indeed become that sort of person.
