Guest Lecture on Life Management &

Lecture Given by Professor Jun Kukita from Kwansei Gakuin University

We were fortunate to have the services of Professor Kukita as a guest speaker during the plenary session.
He stressed the importance of planning our lives in this 21st century global society. He talked about his personal history, his career at the UN and how he came up with his own life management plan.

Contents of the Lecture

In the first part of the lecture, Professor Kukita asked us if we have ever had a moment where we looked up at the sky and wondered about the value of our lives and our place in the universe. He said such an experience was the first step for him in the creation of his life plan. After taking a gap year, he realized the value of work and money, learned more about who he was and where he came from, and studied about many kinds of things such as evolution and philosophy, and then decided to make life management plan.

Professor Kukita stated his growth and happiness is part of the continuum of human evolution, and that when developing his life management plan, he decided on three life goals:

  1. To strengthen and expand his skill base and abilities so that he might have a positive impact on the world;
  2. to work hard to get people in the world to learn to cooperate more to solve global issues;
  3. and to strive to improve the growth and development of the world’s children.

The professor decided to focus on children because the younger generations will be the leaders of the future. To achieve his life mission, he started working at the U.N. He worked there for 20 years, in many countries, dealing with various kinds of global and social issues , such as street children, high suicide rates, and the aftermath of tsunami and other disasters. Those two decades at the U.N. gave him the experience to envision and go about achieving his life mission. It also helped him rediscover the importance of having a life/career management plan.

Professor Kukita taught us that we can design our own lives and plan our futures just as he did, and that by trying to determine our life mission and trying to achieve it can sometimes open up unforeseen opportunities and secure our future . He explained that there are still many unresolved global issues remaining from the 20th century, and we, people in 21st century have the responsibility to change the world and solve these issues by thinking and acting, and doing so globally (when possible) and most certainly locally together with and for the benefit of the rest of humankind.
